TRAINING OVERVIEW
This training presents three different although similar treatments for sewage sludge. The final objective is to create biochar that depending on the specific treatment, can be applied to solve some serious environmental issues.
- How to consider sewage sludge as a good source for environmental remediation
- How to generate three types of biochar from sewage sludge by working on temperature
- How to boost energy generation and pollution remediation with the use of the very same product
During this training you’ll learn three important opportunities to exploit sewage sludge for good. The first one, is to consider it as a raw material to be burnt in order to generate the best possible biochar. Burning temperature of 300-400°C would be best for obtaining the most valuable product. The second opportunity is to generate bio-oil from sewage sludge pyrolisys. In this case, a burning temperature of 550°C allows to get the highest yield and the best properties for bio-oil. The third opportunity is to obtain a great biochar for both energy generation and pollutants removal from the ground. In this case a temperature of 900°C is suggested.
As you can read, biochar and bio-oil are final results of this important training. This fits energy needs and pollution remediation as well. In fact, it’s possible to apply this biochar for remdiation purposes, while its generation releases energy. Such energy can be added to the amount of bio-oil obtained at the end of the process. This “multiple” solution is probably one of the most convenient for giving value to sewage sludge.
Before to start with the application, it’s very important to assess starting conditions. When you are dealing with specific pollution scenarios, please remember that different biochar types work differently on the same pollutant (or pollutants mixture). When your top priority is energy supply, however, you must consider the application of the method with the highest expected yield (generally the second one, that envisages a combustion temperature of 550°C for sewage sludge to generate bio-oil).
The right materials (which types of sewage sludge) to burn for generating biochar and thus additional energy in turn; please do not forget that biochar properties are mainly related to combustion temperature and biomass types; so, the proper selection of raw materials to use if the first essential step towards the best possible goal (even in this case, because sewage sludge is often rich of toxic chemicals).
There is the chance to decide which type of biochar will serve best for the final purpose (energy generation and/or natural remediation of contaminated sites); this does mean that you have the great opportunity to apply the very same method, with three variants, to get different results within a wider area; in other words, the application of these three variants, allows the method to fit many needs.
The generation of new energy is in this case related to a combustion process; to be honest, we must say that such process is not “emissions free”; however, the training focuses the attention on how to limit at best these emissions and specifically how to remove them thanks to the application of external (always natural) methods.
This live training focuses the attention on many opportunities to dispose of sewage sludge in a much more sustainable way. It belongs to the framework called “From Waste Water To Power”. This very special framework is aimed at generating new energy for free by transforming pollutants (in this case a very bulking waste) found in water. For this particular training, basically everyone can really benefit from that: from affected communities up to fossil fuel industries as well as policymakers. By applying the proposed guidelines, there is in fact the true opportunity to act on a widespread issue.

If you wish, there is the chance of ordering a customized handbook that covers more deeply a selected issue related to a safer disposal of sewage sludge for environmental & energy purposes. To this end, we strongly suggest to consider following another extremely important and valuable training, namely “Micro Formula”.
